ΘΕΣΣΑΛΟΝΙΚΗ Ηταν στις 12 ακριβώς το μεσημέρι όταν το πρωθυπουργικό αυτοκίνητο σταμάτησε στην αρχή της οδού Αγγελάκη και ο κ. Γ. Παπανδρέου κατευθύνθηκε πεζός στην πολυκατοικία με τον αριθμό 1. Στον δεύτερο όροφο, σε ένα τυπικό διαμέρισμα του κέντρου, τον περίμενε ένας «απλός» πολίτης. Ο ομότιμος (από το 1968) καθηγητής της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής του ΑΠΘ Εμμανουήλ Κριαράς.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou came to Washington yesterday to ask President Obama to help save his nation from speculators. In other words, he wants America to help him shoot the messenger.

Sorry, Greece is no innocent victim: It helped get itself into a mess -- by exploiting the bailout mentality.

New Yorkers should pay special heed -- because we could be in the same boat.

For years, Greece spent beyond its means and borrowed to cover the difference. It found willing lenders because bondholders figured that the other nations with the common European currency, the euro, would rescue the Greeks when the collapse came.

Don't listen to the whingers - London needs immigrants

Amid the sound and fury over Nick Griffin, there's a sad but unnoticed fact: it has taken this fiasco to make politicians talk about the impact of immigration.

Yesterday MPs Frank Field and Nicholas Soames called for a 75 per cent cut in immigration and accused the Government of "clamping down" on any debate.

What's missing is not only a sense of the benefits of immigration but also of where it came from.

Banks Bet Greece Defaults on Debt They Helped Hide

Bets by some of the same banks that helped Greece shroud its mounting debts may actually now be pushing the nation closer to the brink of financial ruin.
Echoing the kind of trades that nearly toppled the American International Group, the increasingly popular insurance against the risk of a Greek default is making it harder for Athens to raise the money it needs to pay its bills, according to traders and money managers.These contracts, known as credit-default swaps, effectively let banks and hedge funds wager on the financial equivalent of a four-alarm fire: a default by a company or, in the case of Greece, an entire country. If Greece reneges on its debts, traders who own these swaps stand to profit.

Διαβάζω αναλύσεις και άρθρα, παρακολουθώ τηλεοπτικά προγράμματα και μιλώ με ειδικούς και εμπειρογνώμονες για τα τεράστια προβλήματα που αντιμετωπίζουν σήμερα οι ΗΠΑ, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι το 80% του πληθυσμού αυτής της χώρας πιστεύει ότι «η κυβέρνησή (της) έχει αποτύχει». Μέσα σε αυτό το κλίμα πρωτοφανών εσωτερικών διχασμών, υποβόσκοντος ρατσισμού, άκρατης απληστίας της Γουόλ Στριτ και αμερικανικού στρατιωτικού επεκτατισμού, στους τίτλους των ειδήσεων έχει πλέον αρχίσει να εμφανίζεται και η Ελλάδα.
